The creak of the turret ladder and a knock on my bedroom door drag me from a fog of misery. How much time has passed? Hours?
âIsaiah?â
I pull my sleeping bag over my head. Zech canât help me. Not this time.
I hear the door slide back; feel him perch in the entrance of my berth. The light clicks on, seeping in on me.
âThe coroners have finished up and taken themselves off, along with whatâs left of those poor folks. Cops are still taking pictures. Fence guys have got all the major wires up and clipped some temporary netting over itâthey say itâs a good point at which to stop for the night. Mebbe, or mebbe they just figured out thereâs a pool in the central complex, but if they say so. Fence is back up, anyway. So, weâre off-duty until tomorrow, now.â
A twinge of guilt stirsâIâve left Zech up there for hours, without any break to use the head or snack or just relax for a moment. I guess he just peed out the window, but still. If I open my mouth, Iâm afraid Iâll start crying again, and Iâm not a cry baby, so...so I keep it shut.
Silence for a while. Then he gives my leg a squeeze. âIsaiah? I...read the messages.â
Yeah, well, I left them up on the screen, so thatâs no surprise. Figured he had or heâdâve been in here by now, checking I wasnât dying or something.
âIâm really sorry, cub. That womanâs a piece of work, all right. Iâd like to punch her lights out, only I guess that would break rule three.â
I still canât speak.
Zech sighs. âLook, you tried. Some folks just canât be reasoned with and thatâs a fact.â He hesitates. âAnd...maybe itâs for the best. I mean, what we going to do with a baby, huh?â
I sit up and kick him clean out of my berth. âThatâs my child, Zech!â I yell after him. âYour niece or nephewâs got a death sentence and thatâs for the best? You sound like her!â I scramble along and try to pull the door shut, but he pops up again before I can.
âYeah, okay, sorry, Isaiah.â His face blazes hotly. âThat wasnât a nice thing to say. Of course itâs bad. Itâs really bad. Iâm sorry. But you did everything you could, okay?â He reaches for my battered hand, trying to get a better look, but I yank it away. He draws back again. âOkay, look, why donât you come check out that pool; take your mind off it for a bit?â
âNo.â
âDo you mind if I go?â
âYes, fine, go. Have fun. Bye.â I push him out of the way of the door and slide it shut.
âIsaiah...â
âJust go away. Iâm fine.â
Zech sighs and clatters around in the living area for a while. Eventually, he taps on the door again. âOkay, Iâm heading over to the pool; sure you donât want to come?â
I ignore him.
âI left you a coffee on the table. Iâll see you in a bit.â
I hear the âVi door hiss openâthen closed.
